The Socialist Party or PS can trace its history back to the 1896 when the original Socialist Party was formed. However, the modern version was founded in 2003 by the amalgamation of the Democratic Socialist Party (PSD) and the Popular Socialist Party (PSP). Ideologically they describe themselves as social democrats and democratic socialists.

The party fought the 1997 and 1999 elections as part of the Front for a Country in Solidarity (FREPASO) coalition which saw two deputies elected in each election. In 2003 the party took five seats in the 257 seat Chamber of Deputies. We have no record of the Socialist Party winning seats in the 2009 elections but currently they have six seats in the Chamber of Deputies.

The Socialist Party are members of Socialist International.
