Armenian National Congress
Published 2nd April, 2012
The Armenian National Congress or HAK was founded in 2008 by former president Levon Ter-Petrossian. It describes itself as centrist but appears to be focused on democratic and social reforms rather than economic issues.
The Armenian National Congress is a coalition of 13 parties, the People’s Party of Armenia, Republic Party, Armenian National Movement, Social Democratic Hnchak Party, Conservative Party, Democratic Way party, Alternative Political – Civic Initiative, Democratic Fatherland, Progressive Liberal Party of Armenia, Christian Democratic Revival Party, Liberal Party, Armenian Fatherland Party and Human Rights – 96 Party. According to the HAK website, collectively the parties have around 90,000 members.
The parties appear to come from across the political spectrum and the HAK has used demonstrations, especially in 2011, as a focus for its rallying of voters to date. It is standing in the 2012 general election.
