The Australian Greens or Greens were founded in August 1992. They might typically be described as Centre-left and they believe in Green politics which includes ecological sustainability, social justice, grassroots democracy and peace and non-violence.
The Greens have made very little impact in the House of Representatives, winning their first seat in 2010. However, they have done much better in the Senate when they won two seats in 1998 and again in 2004. In 2007 they won three seats and in 2010 that went up to six seats. Currently they hold nine seats in the Senate.
In the various states they have maintained a presence and currently they hold seats in six states and territories with their best representation being in Tasmania where they have five of the 40 seats in the parliament.
The Australian Greens are members of the Global Greens and the Asia-Pacific Green Network.
