The MDD was launched in 1994 by ex President David Dacko.  In the 1993 general election six independent candidates who identified with Dacko won seats to the 85 seat National Assembly.  Subsequently the MDD was formed around this core group.

In 1998 the MDD secured eight seats of 109 in the general election and in 2005 won two seats under the KNK platform.
