Founded in 1991 the PSD entered into an accommodation with the then President Kolingba and the MLPC government.  Their leader Enoch Dérant Lakoué stood in the 1993 and 1999 Presidential elections but without success. 

The PSD won three of 85 seats in 1983, six of 109 seats in 1998 and five of 105 seats in 2005.  They are not fielding a Presidential candidate in the 2011 election but are expected to field candidates in the general election.
