Also known as Viva, the RNDP was founded in 1992. Its founder and leader Delwa Kassiré Koumakoye is legally trained and has served as a judge as well as Prime Minister from 1993 – 1995 and 2007 – 2008.
The RNDP failed to secure any seats in the 1997 general election but won five seats in the 21st April 2002 parliamentary election.
In the 2006 presidential election Koumakoye took 15.13% of the vote, coming second to Idriss Déby.
