People’s Party for Reconstruction and Democracy

The People’s Party for Reconstruction and Democracy or PPRD was founded by Joseph Kabila on 2nd April 2002 with which to support his presidential ambitions. It describes itself as a centre-left and social democratic party.
In the 2006 general election the PPRD won 111 of the 500 seats in the National Assembly making it the largest party. Immediately after the election they created the ‘Alliance of the Presidential Majority’, a collection of eleven parties and lots more individual MPs who went on to form a government.
In the 2007 Senate elections the party won 22 of the 108 seats in the Senate.
