The Democratic Party or PD was formed in early 2001. It describes itself as a social democratic party and believes in progressivism, social liberalism and social democracy. The party is made up, predominantly, of younger people, many of whom have been educated abroad.

In the first elections for the country under United Nations (UN) stewardship, the Democratic Party came second with seven seats in the 88 seat Constituent Assembly.

In the 2007 election the party came fourth, taking eight of the 65 seats in the National Parliament.
