The President is elected by the National Assembly to serve a five year term and may serve a second consecutive term.
Unicameral. Different reports cite the The National Assembly as having either 104 or 150 members. Althought they are elected by direct popular vote to serve five-year terms, only one part, the People’s Front for Democracy and Justice is permitted. Although elections were scheduled for December 2001, they were postponed until the conflict with Ethiopia could be resolved and no national elections have been held since independence.
The Transparency International Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) 2016 places Eritrea at joint 164th out of 176 countries with a CPI 2016 score of 18 (where 100 is least corrupt).
