The Union of Pro Patria and Res Publica (IRL) was founded on 4th June 2006 from the merger of two parties, the Pro Patria Union and the Res Publica. Res Publica having been founded in 2001 and Pro Patria Union in 1995, although its roots go back to the formation of the new republic.
Pro Patria fought the 1992 general election under the Fatherland Alliance and from 1992 until 1994 its Prime Minister was Maart Laar. Pro Patria did badly in 1995, losing 31 seats and falling back to 8 seats. In 2001 they went back up to 18 seats, being the second largest party in the parliament, but fell back again in 2003 with just seven seats.
Res Publica, however, did well in its first election in 2003 and won 28 seats.
Following the merger of the two parties they fought the general election of 2007 and won just 19 seats, coming third in the parliamentary race. Currently they are in coalition government with the Estonian Reform Party.
The IRL is a member of the Centrist Democrat International and the International Democrat Union. It is also a member of the European People’s Party in the European Parliament.
