The Union of the Gabonese People or UPG is also sometimes referred to as the Gabonese People’s Union or Union of the People of Gabon. It was founded in 1991 by Pierre Mamboundou.
The party has a history of fighting presidential and general elections without success. But in 2006 they achieved a breakthrough when they took eight of the 120 seats in the National Assembly, making them the largest of the opposition parties.
