The Democratic Left or DIMAR was founded in June 2010 when the Renewal Wing of Synaspismos decided to breakaway. They describe themselves as left wing and believe in Democratic Socialism, Social Democracy and Pro-Europeanism.

Currently the party has ten members of the parliament as a result of defections and in March 2012 they merged with the centre-left Free Citizens party.
