Great Indonesia Movement Party

The Great Indonesia Movement Party or Gerindra was formed in April 2008 by former Indonesian special forces commander Prabowo Subianto, the son-in-law of Suharto. The party ideology is based on Pancasila which has five key strands, belief in the divinity of God, a just and civilized humanity, the unity of Indonesia, democracy and social justice.
In the 2009 general election the party took 4.46% of the vote and 26 of the 560 seats in the People’s Representative Council.
In the July presidential election Prabowo stood as Megawati Sukarnoputri’s running mate and together they took 26.79% of the vote and came second.
