The People’s Conscience Party or Hanura was founded in December 2006 by a group of five generals led by General Wiranto. The party ideology is based on Pancasila which has five key strands, belief in the divinity of God, a just and civilized humanity, the unity of Indonesia, democracy and social justice.

The party is, in effect a platform for Wiranto to stand in presidential elections. In the 2004 election he stood for Golkar but only managed to get a third place and 22.15% of the vote and decided he needed his own party.

In 2009 the party won 17 seats and 3.77% of the vote. In the presidential election Wiranto stood as running mate to Jusuf Kalla the presidential candidate for Golkar and Hanura; they managed just 12.41% of the vote.
