Executives of Construction Party

The Executives of Construction Party or ECP was founded in 1996 by ten serving Cabinet ministers, four vice-presidents, the Governor of the Central Bank and the Mayor of Tehran to support the presidential bid of Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani. Subsequently the ten ministers had to withdraw to comply with legal restrictions on their involvement. The party was formerly known as the Servants of Construction.
In the 1996 general election the ECP took 80 seats in the 275 seat Majlis or parliament. In 2000, as part of the reformist alliance they won 189 of the 290 seats.
Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani went on to win the presidential election of 1989 with 96.1% of the vote, but standing as the Combatant Clergy (CCA) candidate. In 1993 he won again with 64%.
The party newspaper, Kargozaran, was closed down by the government in 2009 for criticising the then president.
