The Green Path of Hope was founded by Mir-Hossein Mousavi on 15th August 2009. It describes itself as centrist and believes in Islamic democracy, reform, economic reform and constitutionalism.
The party came about as part of the protest movement following the election, for a second time, of Mahmoud Ahmedinejad. The word party has been avoided to overcome legal restrictions of parties. Following the Arab Spring in other countries, in early 2011 Mousavi called for protests and was subsequently placed under house arrest which still remains in force.
