Independence is a new party which was launched on 17th January 2011 by Defence Minister Ehud Barak. It describes itself as centrist and believes in Zionism.
Following the decision of Ehud Barak to retire from politics, on 6th December 2012 the party announced that it would not stand in the 2013 election because of a lack of strong leadership. A statement from the party said “The Independence party will continue to exist as a party and its members will decide in the future how to act in order to advance the interests of the country, its security, its economy, its social and democratic vitality, on the basis of the ideas upon which the party was founded.”
