The Civic Choice or SC was founded on 4th January 2013 as a party to support the technocrat Prime Minister Mario Monti. The party describes itself as Centrist and believes in Centrism and Liberalism.
The party acted as the focal point for a coalition of three parties, the Civic Choice (SC), Union of the Centre (UdC) and Future and Freedom (FLI), which called itself ‘With Monti for Italy’.
Mario Monti had led a technocrat government from December 2011 to December 2012 and had imposed an austerity programme as well as carrying through a range of liberalising measures on the Italian economy. The moves had proved unpopular with the people and as a result in the 2013 election the coalition only managed to win 47 of 630 seats in the Chamber of Deputies (of which Civic Choice took 39 seats) and 19 of 315 seats in the upper house or Senate.
