Five Star Movement

The Five Star Movement or M5S was founded on 4th October 2009 by Beppe Grillo as an anti-establishment and protest movement. The party believes in Populism, Environmentalism, Anti-corruption, E-democracy and Euroscepticism.
Originally known as the Movement of National Liberation (Movimento di Liberazione Nazionale) the party was established by Beppe Grillo, a comedian, to combat what was seen as corrupt politicians. The five stars refer to the five issues at the heart of the party.
In the 2013 general election the party was the receptacle of the anti-establishment vote and scored a spectacular 25.55% of the popular vote in the Chamber of Deputies and 23.79% in the Senate. This resulted in them taking 109 of 630 seats in the Chamber of Deputies and 54 of 315 seats in the Senate.
