Future and freedom for Italy or FLI was founded on 30th July 2010 by Gianfranco Fini when he left the People of Freedoms (PdL) party. It describes itself as a Centre-Right party and believes in Liberal Conservatism, National Conservatism and Liberalism.
Following the split from the PdL the new party gained a number of senators to its ranks as well as 33 deputies. Since its formation, though, the party has suffered from splits and ideological divisions which has made it difficult to represent its views to the people.
In the 2013 general election the party decided to fight the election as part of Mario Monti’s ‘With Monti for Italy’ coalition. The austerity measures taken by Monti’s technocrat government were not popular with the people and in the election Future and Freedom did not win any seats.
Future and Freedom for Italy is a member of the European People’s Party (EPP) group in the European parliament where it has three of the 73 national seats.
