People’s New Party

The People’s New Party or PNP or Kokumin Shintō was founded in 2005 by members from both the Liberal Democratic Party of Japan (LDP) and the Liberal Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ). It describes itself as Centre-right and believes in Social Conservatism, Protectionism and Populism.
In the election of 2005 the party won four seats in the 480 seat House of Representatives. In 2009 it dropped a seat to go to three seats. It also has three seats in the 242 seat upper House of Councillors. Following the 2009 election the People’s New Party became a coalition partner in the Democratic Party of Japan led government.
