The Free List or FL was founded in 1985 as the first party to oppose the two big parties in a third party challenge, the first since 1974 and the decline of the Christian Social Party. The Free List describes itself as Centre-Left and believes in Social Democracy and Green politics.

In the 1986 and 1989 elections the Free List failed to gain any representation in the Landtag. Their first win was a two seat win in February 1993. Since then they have held representation in the 25 seat Landtag. In 2005 the party took three seats, their best result to date, but dropped back once more to one seat in 2009.
