Published 3rd January, 2013
The Progressive Citizens’ Party or FBPL was founded in 1918 as the Citizens’ Party before taking on its modern name. The party describes itself as Centre-Right and believes in Conservatism, Christian Democracy and Economic Liberalism.
Although founded in 1918 it did not win a general election outright until 1928 when it won 11 of 15 seats in the Landtag. The party went on to be the majority party from 1928 to 1970 and again from 1974 to 1978, February to October 1993 and 2001 to 2009.
From 1938 the party participated in coalition governments with the Patriotic Union (VU) but decided to go into opposition in 1997, ending a long period of cooperation between the two centre-right parties.
The Progressive Citizens’ Party is a member of the European Democrat Union (EDU).
