The Socialist Party of Macedonia or SPM was founded in September 1990 as the successor to the Socialist Alliance – Socialist Party of Macedonia. They describe their ideology as democratic socialism.
The SPM was a junior member of the SDSM coalition government of 1992 to 1998. They were unsuccessful in 1998 and prior to the 2002 election broke relations with the SDSM, winning just one seat in that election.
In 2003 they formed a coalition with two other parties, the Democratic Alternative and Democratic Union. In 2006 they joined the VMRO–DPMNE coalition government, having increased their seats to three. They maintained that relationship going in to the 2008 election and are members of the ‘For a Better Macedonia’ coalition government.
