People’s Party

The People’s Party or PP was founded by Joyce Banda in 2011 after she was expelled from the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).

Joyce Banda was elected Vice-President in May 2009 on Bingu wa Mutharika’s Presidential ticket. By 2010 relations between the two had deteriorated and in December 2010 she was sacked as a Vice-President of the DPP for undefined ‘anti-party’ activities. Although the President also tried to sack her as the country’s Vice-President he was unable to do so constitutionally so instead she was expelled from the DPP and excluded from Cabinet meetings.

When Bingu wa Mutharika died on 5th April 2012 and after a period where the DPP tried to prevent her from becoming President, Joyce Banda was eventually inaugurated as the new President of Malawi.

A corruption scandal called ‘Cashgate’ hit President Joyce Banda’s campaign hard in 2014 and along with a muddled campaign she managed only third place in the Presidential election with 20.2% of the vote. The People’s Party also came third in the 192 seat National Assembly with 26 seats.
