GreenLeft or GL was founded in 1989 as an alliance between the Evangelical People’s Party (EVP), the Political Party of Radicals (PPR), the Pacifist Socialist Party (PSP) and the Communist Party of the Netherlands (CPN). They describe themselves as left-wing and believe in green politics.

Their first outing in the 1989 general election saw them win six of the 150 seats in the House of Representatives. From there they climbed to 11 seats in 1998, their best showing to date, with 7.3% of the vote. Since then they have managed ten seats in 2002, eight seats in 2003, seven seats in 2006 and in 2010 they took ten seats with 6.7% of the vote.

The GreenLeft is a member of the Global Greens and the European Green Party. In the European Parliament where they have three of 26 national seats they are members of the Greens – European Free Alliance group.
