Published 7th November, 2011

The Māori Party was founded on 7th July 2004 as a result of the foreshore and seabed controversy into whether the Māori had a legitimate claim to ownership of part or all of New Zealand’s foreshore and seabed. The party believes in indigenous rights.

In their first election the Māori Party won four seats in 2005 and increased this to five seats in 2008. They joined the National Party coalition government in 2008.
