Nigerien Party for Democracy and Socialism

A left wing party and part of the Socialist International the PNDS-Tarraya is one of Niger’s largest partys. It was founded in December 1990.

The PNDS-Tarraya won 13 seats in the February 1993 general election and formed a coalition with five other parties to form the Alliance of the Forces for Change government. The PNDS-Tarraya left the coalition in late 1994 leading to the 1995 election where the party took 12 seats in the 83 seat National Assembly.

In 1996, following a military coup, fresh elections were held and the PNDS-Tarraya boycotted this election. In 1999 they were back and won 16 seats in the 24th November election.

In the 2004 Presidential election their candidate Mahamadou Issoufou won 24.6% of the vote and second place. In the general election they won 17 seats in the enlarged 113 seat National Assembly.

They boycotted the 2009 general election.

Their Presidential candidate for the 2011 campaign is Mahamadou Issoufou.
