The Papua New Guinea Party or PNG Party was founded in 2007 by former Prime Minister and leader of the People’s Democratic Movement, Mekere Morauta
The party won eight of the 109 seats in the National Parliament in 2007. Morauta stood down as leader in 2010 and Belden Namah, who had joined the party from the National Alliance, became the new leader.
In 2011 Belden Namah became Deputy Prime Minister under Peter O’Neill as part of the coalition government. The party now has 25 members of parliament since the recent change in government.
