The Progressive Democratic Party or PDP was founded in 2007 by a splinter group from the Party for a Country of Solidarity (PPS). The party describes itself as Left-wing and believes in Democratic socialism and Social democracy.
In the 2008 general election the party won one seat in the Senate and one in the Chamber of Deputies. The party also supported the presidential candidacy of Fernando Lugo and his Patriotic Alliance for Change (PAC). Lugo won the presidential election but the party withdrew from the governing coalition giving outside support until 2012 when Lugo was impeached.
