About Political Parties in the Philippines

In the 2013 elections there were two main coalition groupings.

Team PNoy

Team PNoy is a play on words which means Filipino People, but also refers to the nickname of President Benigno Aquino III of whom all the parties involved are supporters.

The coalition came into being on 26th January 2013 and the main party forming the coalition is the president’s party, the Liberal Party of the Philippines.

The main parties in the coalition are:

Liberal Party
Laban ng Demokratikong Pilipino
Nationalist People’s Coalition
Nacionalista Party
Akbayan Citizens’ Action Party

United Nationalist Alliance

The United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) is the main opposition alliance which replaced the former United Opposition (UNO) coalition for the 2013 elections. The UNA was officially formed on 4th April 2012.

The main parties in the coalition are:

Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino (PMP)
Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban)

But there are a number of smaller affiliated coalition parties which are regionally based:

Asenso Manileño (Progress for Manilans) – Manila
Kabalikat ng Bayan sa Kaunlaran (Partners of the Nation for Progress) – Manila
One Cebu – Cebu
Padayon Pilipino (Filipinos Ahead) – Misamis Oriental
Partido Magdiwang (Magdiwang Party) – San Juan City
Partido Navoteño (Party of the People of Navotas) – Navotas City
People’s Champ Movement – Sarangani
Team Binay – Makati City
Timpuyog ti Baguio (Baguio Alliance) – Baguio City
