The National Union for the Progress of Romania or UNPR was founded in 2010 from breakaway groups of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and the National Liberal Party (PNL). They describe themselves as social democrats and believe in Social democracy and Progressivism.

The party is against right wing policies and currently they hold 18 seats in the 334 seat Chamber of Deputies. In 2012 they joined the Social Democratic Party (PSD) led Social Liberal Union (USL) and will fight the 2012 general election as part of that alliance.
