The Christian Democratic Party or PDC was founded in 1990 by Jean-Nepomuscene Nayinzira, a Hutu.
Following the 1994 Rwandan Genocide, Nayinzira joined forces with the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) and was a minister in their first government for six years before being removed for “immoral behaviour”.
Nayinzira stood as the party’s presidential candidate in 2003 and won 1% of the vote. In the 2003 general election the party won three of the 80 seats in the newly formed Chamber of Deputies.
In 2008 the party formed a coalition with the RPF and five other parties which won 42 of the 80 seats.
