Human Rights Protection Party

The HRPP was founded in 1979 as Western Samoa’s first formal political party. It has been the governing party since 1982 except for two brief periods in 1986 and 1987.
In the 1996 elections the HRPP took 24 of the 49 seats in the parliament or Fono, in 2001 this dropped to 23 seats but in 2006 the HRPP took 30 seats. In the 2006 election the HRPP were subsequently joined by 5 independents.
The Founders of the HRPP Va’ai Kolone and Tofilau Eti Alesana both became Prime Ministers.
The current leader of the party is Tuila’epa Sailele Malielegoi.
