G17 Plus started life as an NGO of economic experts in 1997 which became a political party on 16th December 2002. It describes itself as a centre-right party which believes in liberal conservatism, economic liberalism and Pro-Europeanism.
At the 2003 general election the party won 34 seats and joined the minority government with the Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS). The party left the government in 2006 and in 2007 they won 19 seats and entered into the new government coalition.
In 2008 the party joined the ‘For a European Serbia’ led by Boris Tadić’s Democratic Party and they took 22 seats in the 250 seat National Assembly of Serbia. Again they entered into the new government and in 2011 Verica Kalanović became Deputy Prime Minister.
In May 2010 G17+ became the lead party in a new alliance called the United Regions of Russia a pro-decentralisation coalition which is made up of national as well as regional parties.
The G17+ is an observer member of the International Democrat Union and an associate member of the European People’s Party (EPP).
