The People’s Party

The People’s Party or Parti Lepep was formally known as the Seychelles People’s Progressive Front or SPPF. The party was founded in 1964 by France-Albert René as the left of centre Seychelles People’s United Party. It took its SPPF name in 1978.
Having staged a successful coup against Sir James Mancham in 1977 Albert René went on to run the country as president until 2004 when he handed over to the current leader and president, James Michel.
The SPPF has governed since 1977 and was the only legal party from 1979 to 1991. For much of its time in office the SPPF has held the majority of seats in the National Assembly. However, in 2002 and again in 2007, the Seychelles National party took 11 seats to the 23 of the SPPF in the 34 seat parliament.
