The Singapore Democratic Party or SDP was founded in 1980 by Chiam See Tong as a liberal and centrist party.

Chiam See Tong was elected to parliament in 1984 and in 1991 the SDP won two further seats, but the party lost all of it seats in 1997. They have not held any seats since.

The SDP is a member of Liberal International, the Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats and is affiliated to the Alliance of Democrats.
