Azanian People’s Organisation

The Azanian People’s Organisation or AZAPO is a black consciousness movement which was formed on 28th April 1978 out of three organisations; the Black People’s Convention (BPC), the South African Students’ Organisation (SASO) and the Black Community Programmes (BCP). The party excludes white members.
Its original leader, Mosibudi Mangena won the party’s only seat in the 1999 general election and retained its single seat in 2004 and 2009. The party lost its final representation in the 2014 general election.
