Galician Nationalist Bloc

The Galician Nationalist Bloc or BNG was founded in 1983 and advocates greater autonomy for Galicia. It describes itself as left wing and believes in Galician nationalism, social democracy and democratic socialism.
In the Parliament of Galicia, the party took five seats in 1989, 13 in 1993 and 18 in 1997. Since then it has fallen back and in the 2009 election they won 12 of the 75 seats.
In the general elections they won two seats to the Congress of Deputies in 1996, that went up to three in 2000 but dropped back to two in 2004 and they retained their two seats in 2008.
The Galician nationalist Bloc are affiliated to the European Free Alliance.
