The Republican Left of Catalonia or ERC was founded in 1931 and was the majority party in the Catalan parliament of 1932. They describe themselves as left wing and believe in Catalan independence, republicanism, social democracy, left wing nationalism and progressivism.
In the late 1930s they were outlawed by the Franco regime and only gained legal recognition again in 1977.
As part of an alliance they contested the 1977 election and won one seat in the Congress of Deputies. They retained their one seat in the 1979 and 1982 elections, but were not represented after the 1986 or 1989 elections. In 1993 they regained their one seat which they held in 1996 and 2000. In 2004 they had their best result ever, winning eight seats in the 350 seat Congress of Deputies, but dropped back to three seats in 2008.
They are affiliated to the European Free Alliance and in the European Parliament their one MEP is a member of the Greens – European Free Alliance.
