Published 30th December, 2011

The New Party or NP was established in 1993 by dissident Kuomintang members and merged later that year with the China Social Democratic Party. It describes itself as centre-right and believes in conservatism, Chinese nationalism and anti-communism. It is part of the Pan Blue coalition.

In the 1995 legislative elections the New Party did well in its first outing, winning 21 of 164 seats in the Legislative Yuan.

In 1998 that dropped back to 11 seats out of 225 seats and in the 2001 and 2004 elections they managed just one seat.

In 2008 the New Party candidates stood as Kuomintang candidates and the party won two seats, however they won no seats in the national list where the party name was used
