Tongan parties are relatively new in being formed and have little history. There are four parties contesting election currently as follows:

The Democratic Party of the Friendly Islands was founded in September 2010 and took several Members of Parliament from the Human Rights and Democracy Movement when it was founded. The party won 12 of the 17 people’s representative seats in the 2010 general election but were given just two seats in the Cabinet.

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) was founded in April 2005 following a split in the Human Rights and Democracy Movement. The party won two seats in the 2008 general election but lost both seats in 2010.

The Sustainable Nation-Building Party was founded in 2007 in New Zealand but to date has failed to win any seats.

The Tongan Democratic Labor Party was founded in June 2010 by members of the Tongan Public Servants Association. It failed to win any seats in the 2010 election.
