Until 9th March 2011 the Constitutional Democratic Rally or RCD was the ruling party in Tunisia. Previously it had been known as Destour and the Neo Destour Party which traces its roots back to 1920 and the Tunisian Nationalists.
In 1988 the RCD was formed by the then prime minister Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali. He subsequently became president and remained so until 14th January 2011 when he fled the country after street protests.
The party was formerly a member of Socialist International and espoused secularism, neoliberalism and social democracy.
