The Party of People’s Unity or PUP was founded in January 1981 but was not recognised until November 1983. It describes itself as socialist and believes in socialism and pan Arabism.
Although it did not achieve early success, in 1994 the PUP won 2 seats. That increased to seven seats in 1999 and eleven seats in 2004. In the 2009 parliament they were the third largest party with 12 seats and 3.39% of the vote in the 214 seat Chamber of Deputies.
