The Peace and Democracy Party or BDP succeeds the Democratic Society Party (DTP) which was closed down by the Turkish Constitutional Court in 2009 for alleged connections with the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK). Currently they have 20 seats in parliament.
The BDP describes itself as a social democratic and Kurdish nationalist party. It is an observer member of Socialist International and associate member of the Party of European Socialists.
