The FDC was formed in 2004 by the merger of opposition groups including Reform Agenda, the Parliamentary Advocacy Forum and the National Democratic Forum as well as disaffected members of the DP and NRM.
Its Party leader, Dr Kizza Besigye stood as their Presidential candidate in 2001 and 2006.
In the 2006 General Election the FDC became the second largest party in the National Assembly of Uganda, taking 37 seats. Their Presidential candidate came second with 37.39% of the vote.
The FDC is a member of the Democrat Union of Africa (DUA) and an International Democrat Union (IDU) Observer.
