Published 10th October, 2014

The Independent Party or PI was founded in 2003 to forge an independent way between the left wing Broad Front and the two traditional parties on the right wing. The party describes itself as Centre-left and believes in Social democracy and Christian humanism.

So far the party has had limited success, winning two seats in 2004 and again in 2009 to the Chamber of Deputies. Its leader and Presidential candidate in 2004 and 2009, Pablo Mieres, took 1.9% and 2.56% of the vote respectively in the two elections
