The People’s Progress Party or PPP was founded in 2002 after a split in the Melanesian Progressive Party (MPP).
At the 2004 general election the party won three of the 52 seats in parliament and in 2008 increased its tally to four seats.
In 2004 the People’s Progress Party was part of the government coalition but in 2007 the party was expelled from the Cabinet. In 2009 the party was invited to join the new coalition government and in June 2011 its leader, Sato Kilman, was elected as Prime Minister.
