Vanuatu Republican Party

The Vanuatu Republican Party was founded in January 1998 by former Prime Minister Maxime Carlot Karman following his break with the Union of Moderate Parties (UMP). They are a Francophone Party.
Karman was the only successful candidate for the party in the 1998 general election but in 2002 they went up to three seats, then four seats in 2004 and then seven seats in 2008.
The party was part of the coalition government between 2004 and 2008. In 2008 they joined the new government of Edward Natapei but were thrown out of government after having been suspected of conspiring to overthrow the prime minister in a vote of no confidence in 2009.
