Arab Socialist Ba’ath Party – Yemen Region
Published 23rd January, 2012
The Arab Socialist Ba’ath Party – Yemen Region is part of the wider Arab Socialist Ba’ath Party based in Damascus, although it is said to be closer to the Iraqi Ba’ath Party. As such it can trace its history back to the 1950s, but it only came to the fore in Yemen in 1990. It believes in Ba’athism and describes itself as socialist.
In the 1993 general election the party won seven of the 301 seats in the Assembly of Representatives. That dropped to two seats in 1997 and went up to four seats in 2003.
The party supported the nomination of Ali Abdullah Saleh in the 1999 presidential election.
